Job description

Our client is a foremost firm in the Marine Transport Sector of the economy, with local and international repute, situated in Lagos, Nigeria.  The organisation has vast experience managing, enhancing, and improving navigation opportunities for the country's waterways.

We are looking to recruit a Dredging Engineer who will ensure the correct use of dredging machinery, create strategies and estimations, and ensure that environmental standards are adhered to during dredging operations.

This role is crucial to the success of a significant international euro-based project in Lagos State.

Job Objective

This position aims to monitor and carry out dredging operations, including eliminating sediment from the bottom of waterways, rivers, and oceans. Additionally, the individual will maintain dredging machinery, create strategies and estimations, and ensure that environmental standards are adhered to during dredging operations.

This role involves working closely with project managers, environmental specialists, and construction teams to ensure that all operations are conducted efficiently, safely, and in compliance with the regulations.

Functional Responsibilities

Planning and Design of Dredging Operations

  • Feasibility Studies and Site Surveys : Conduct surveys and feasibility studies to assess the site conditions, including water depth, sediment composition, and environmental factors.
  • Project Design and Specifications : Develop the design for dredging projects, determining the scope, methods, and equipment required for safe and efficient dredging.
  • Hydrographic and Geotechnical Analysis : Analyze hydrographic data and sediment samples to plan appropriate dredging strategies and ensure the operation meets design criteria.
  • Dredging Method Selection : Based on the site conditions and project requirements, select the appropriate dredging methods (e.g., suction, cutter suction, trailing suction hopper dredging).

Execution and Supervision of Dredging Operations

  • On-Site Supervision : Oversee dredging operations, ensuring they are carried out according to design specifications, project timelines, and safety protocols.
  • Equipment Management : Ensure that dredging equipment (e.g., dredgers, barges, pumps) is in optimal working condition and appropriate for the specific project.
  • Real-Time Monitoring : Utilize monitoring systems to track dredging progress, assess sediment removal, and adjust operational parameters as needed.
  • Coordination with Other Departments : Collaborate with marine operations, environmental teams, and project managers to ensure smooth operations and adherence to timelines.
  • Environmental Management and Compliance

  • Environmental Impact Assessments : Evaluate the environmental impact of dredging activities, particularly regarding water quality, marine life, and sediment disposal.
  • Sustainability Practices : Implement environmentally sustainable dredging practices, including mitigating impacts on marine ecosystems and using eco-friendly technologies when possible.
  • Regulatory Compliance : Ensure that dredging activities comply with local, national, and international environmental regulations, including water and waste management protocols.
  • Disposal and Reclamation : Manage the disposal of dredged materials, ensuring they are handled and disposed of according to environmental and safety guidelines. If applicable, use dredged materials for land reclamation.
  • Health and Safety Management

  • Risk Assessments : Conduct health and safety risk assessments to identify potential hazards associated with dredging operations, such as vessel collisions, sediment contamination, and underwater obstructions.
  • Safety Protocols : Implement and enforce safety measures and protocols to protect the workforce and the environment during dredging operations.
  • Incident Management : Lead investigations into accidents or safety incidents, implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Project Management

  • Budgeting and Cost Control : Develop and manage budgets for dredging projects, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and costs are kept within budget limits.
  • Scheduling and Timeline Management : Create project schedules and ensure that dredging operations meet project deadlines while minimising operational disruptions.
  • Contractor and Vendor Management : Manage relationships with contractors and suppliers, ensuring that all third-party services meet project standards and contractual obligations.
  • Resource Allocation : Allocate resources, including personnel, equipment, and materials, ensuring they are used effectively to meet project objectives.
  • Technical Documentation and Reporting

  • Progress Reporting : Prepare regular reports on dredging progress, including site conditions, equipment performance, environmental impact, and project milestones.
  • Data Analysis and Record Keeping : Maintain accurate records of hydrographic surveys, sediment sampling data, and dredging volumes to assess project outcomes and performance.
  • Technical Documentation : Prepare detailed technical documentation, including dredging plans, equipment specifications, and environmental assessments for internal use and regulatory submissions.
  • Innovation and Technology Integration

  • Use of Dredging Software : Use specialised software, such as hydrographic survey systems and sediment modelling tools, to plan and monitor dredging operations.
  • Adopting New Technologies : Stay informed about advancements in dredging technologies and techniques, such as automation, remote-controlled equipment, and environmentally friendly dredging methods.
  • Optimization of Dredging Methods : Optimise techniques to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and minimise environmental impacts.
  • Stakeholder and Regulatory Engagement

  • Engagement with Authorities : Liaise with government agencies, port authorities, environmental regulators, and local communities to ensure compliance and gain necessary permits for dredging operations.
  • Community Relations : Address concerns from local communities regarding the environmental and social impact of dredging operations, promoting transparency and responsible practices.

  • Permitting and Approvals : Ensure all required permits and approvals are in place before commencing dredging activities, coordinating with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
  • Post-Dredging Analysis and Maintenance

  • Post-Dredging Surveys : Conduct surveys after dredging to verify that project objectives have been met, such as achieving the required depth or volume of sediment removal.
  • Maintenance Dredging Plans : Develop maintenance dredging plans to ensure that navigational channels, harbours, and other waterways remain at the required depth over time.
