DESCRIPTOR

• Responsible for the management of a unit of technical specialists in support of business objectives.
• Normal functions pertaining to management (people production customer) apply but in a technical environment and manages direct technical team leaders and specialists).
• Also responsible for technical deliveries themselves (high level of technical knowledge in related fields to their own staff).
• Technical skills would relate to the technical operations space i.e. underwriting /claims / reinsurance etc.
• Owns operational efficiency and quality.
• Contributes to projects impacting on business deliverables.
• Supports major operational decision making of the business.
• Provides operational and best practice context for internal environment.
• Builds relationships with peers and/or colleagues that impact across business areas.
• Support clear and effective communication to team and business to achieve operational excellence.

KEY RESULT AREAS

Technical Coordination and Risk Oversight

• Support coordination of technical activities across underwriting (retail and corporate) claims reinsurance and other life operations to ensure consistency in standards assumptions and execution.
• Support the monitoring of technical performance and risk indicators across units identifying emerging issues affecting data quality and operational integrity
• Supports the Head of Technical in maintaining effective technical governance including preparation of management reports dashboards and escalation papers.

Team Effectiveness

• Manages service delivery through a team of unit leads
• Supports the HR function for the department as well as all day-to-day staff administration.
• Drives operational excellence through area of supervision.
• Support operational and best practice context for internal environment.
• Holds team leads accountable for managerial/technical work including selection performance management and talent management.
• Balances own priorities with directing and motivating others.
• Plans and assigns work over the applicable period.
• Guides and directs staff to achieve operational excellence standards.
• Creates an environment for optimal performance.
• Selects potential staff to sustain customer/client service delivery.

Building Relationships

• Build relationships with peers and/or colleagues that impact across business areas.

Operational Delivery/Efficiency:

• Ensures the effective implementation and appropriateness of operational processes.
• Owns operational efficiency and quality including an operations balanced scorecard incorporating finance people process and customer dimensions of the business.
• Manages delivery of specialist team in support of business objectives.
• Responsible for delivering operational projects within field of expertise.
• May be personally responsible for some technical deliveries.
• Extensive experience in day-to-day management of a life technical team

Budget Control

• Manages an operational budget.

Governance & Compliance

• Drives accountability for governance and compliance at technical/operational level.

Technical Consultation

• Provides insurance technical and solutions advice.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

• Bachelors degree
• CIIN qualification.
• 5 - 7 years technical operations experience in the Life Insurance sector
• Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
• Interpersonal and time management skills
• Good knowledge of MS packages (Especially MS Word MS Excel MS PowerPoint and Outlook)
