Job Overview

The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring that all terminal activities are carried out in a safe and healthy working environment. The role involves monitoring daily operations, identifying hazards, ensuring compliance with safety policies and regulatory requirements, and promoting a strong safety culture across the terminal. The Safety Officer works closely with employees, contractors, and management to prevent accidents, respond to safety concerns, and support continuous improvement in workplace safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Patrol cargo areas to identify unsafe acts or conditions (e.g., improper stacking of Dangerous Goods, faulty crane operations)
• Ensure compliance with international and national maritime safety frameworks
• Verify proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and maintenance of safety/rescue equipment
• Conduct routine safety inductions, toolbox talks, and emergency drills for port workers and stevedores
• Monitor workplace safety practices and report hazards promptly
• Investigate incidents and accidents, ensuring corrective actions are implemented
• Support emergency response procedures and readiness
• Prepare accurate and timely safety reports
• Promote employee safety awareness and engagement

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in a relevant discipline
• Field of Study: Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Safety, Environmental Management, Logistics & Supply Chain Management, or related field
• Experience: 0–3 years in safety or HSE-related roles
• Knowledge:
  • Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) principles
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment
  • Accident/incident investigation
  • Emergency response procedures
  • Fire prevention and fire safety
  • PPE requirements
  • Workplace safety regulations and compliance
  • Environmental management practices
