Job description

A Biochemist studies the chemical processes and substances that occur within living organisms. The role involves conducting experiments, analyzing biological samples, supporting research, improving production processes, and ensuring compliance with scientific and quality standards. Biochemists work in laboratories across industries such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, food processing, biotechnology, and manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

1. Laboratory Research & Analysis

Conduct biochemical tests and experiments on cells, enzymes, proteins, DNA, and other biological molecules.

Analyze samples using instruments such as spectrophotometers, centrifuges, electrophoresis systems, chromatographs, and microscopes.

Interpret data to understand chemical reactions in living organisms.

2. Product & Process Development

Assist in developing new products such as pharmaceuticals, food supplements, enzymes, and biochemical reagents.

Support optimization of production processes in industries (e.g., fermentation, brewing, food processing).

Participate in pilot studies and research innovations.

3. Quality Control & Assurance

Perform tests on raw materials, in-process samples, and final products to ensure they meet quality specifications.

Follow GMP, GLP, ISO, HACCP, and other regulatory standards depending on the industry.

Record deviations, report abnormalities, and recommend corrective actions.

4. Data Documentation & Reporting

Maintain accurate laboratory records, logbooks, and electronic data systems.

Prepare analytical reports, research summaries, and technical documentation.

Present findings to supervisors, scientists, or management teams.

5. Equipment Operation & Maintenance

Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments.

Troubleshoot simple technical problems and report faulty equipment.

Ensure proper storage and handling of reagents, samples, and chemicals.

6. Safety & Compliance

Follow laboratory safety procedures, including proper PPE use and waste management.

Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and laboratory regulations.

Maintain MSDS records and support internal or external audits.

7. Collaboration & Research Support

Work with multidisciplinary teams including chemists, microbiologists, quality officers, and production personnel.

Assist senior scientists in research activities and experimental design.

Participate in scientific training, seminars, or process improvement initiatives.
